The exclusive VIP reception welcomed filmmakers, actors, ministers, diplomats, luxury industry leaders, and global entertainment executives. Yet the emotional center of the evening belonged to one extraordinary woman: Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi.
Elegant, charismatic, and deeply connected to the world of arts and entertainment, the Princess transformed the evening into far more than a diplomatic reception. She brought humanity, warmth, and artistic passion to Cannes.
After the official speeches celebrating Thailand’s growing role in global cinema and creative industries, guests witnessed an unforgettable moment. Her Royal Highness took the stage and began singing live, turning the sophisticated gala into a joyful celebration. But behind the glamour stands a deeply fascinating personal story.
Born on April 5, 1951, Princess Ubolratana is the eldest child of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit, and the elder sister of Thailand’s current monarch, King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X).
From an early age, she demonstrated intellectual ambition and international curiosity. After attending Chitralada School in Thailand, she moved to the United States for higher education, graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics — a remarkable achievement at a time when few women entered such fields internationally.
She later completed a master’s degree in public health at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Yet her life path would soon become one of the most unconventional stories within modern royal history.
While studying in the United States, she fell in love with American citizen Peter Ladd Jensen. Despite strong opposition from the royal establishment, Princess Ubolratana chose independence and married him in 1972. Following the marriage, she gave up her royal title and spent more than 26 years living in the United States under the name Julie Jensen.
Her life in America represented both personal sacrifice and personal freedom — a royal figure choosing love, motherhood, and an ordinary life far from palace traditions.
After her divorce in 1998, she gradually returned to Thailand and resumed her public role within Thai society. Since permanently returning in 2001, she has become deeply involved in charitable foundations, humanitarian initiatives, youth development programs, and cultural projects dedicated to improving quality of life for disadvantaged communities.
At the same time, Princess Ubolratana developed a strong public presence within entertainment and media. Passionate about acting, music, film, and storytelling, she became widely admired for connecting royal tradition with contemporary culture.
This passion was fully visible at Cannes.
Her speech during Thai Night reflected pride in Thailand’s artistic identity and confidence in the future of Thai cinema. She celebrated Thailand not only as a world-class filming destination, but as a country rich in creativity, culture, and storytelling capable of reaching global audiences.
